litter robot smells so bad: what to check first

Short answer

Check setup first. For the Litter-Robot 4 only, Whisker requires clumping litter, with one exception in its manual for small beads or crystals that pass through the screen. Its getting started guide says to fill just below the MAX line on the first fill, and to reset the weight scale after adding litter or emptying the drawer. Clean as its guide says. Ask Whisker support before adding any powder or granule, and contact them if the smell stays.

Litter robot smells so bad that you want a fast answer, so start with setup, not a new product. This guide lists the checks to make first: the maker's guidance, litter type, fill level, waste area, and when to contact support.

Start with the maker's own cleaning steps before trying anything extra.

Check the maker's cleaning guidance

Whisker's Litter-Robot 4 cleaning guide says to press Empty to empty the globe, return to Home, then power off and unplug before removing it. Wash the globe with water and mild soap, with no bleach inside it, and dry it completely before reassembly. The drawer can be washed with soap and water. Never submerge, spray or soak the base or control panel.

These cleaning and litter checks come from Whisker's Litter-Robot 4 guides and apply to that model only. If you own another model, open that model's guide.

Litter type and fill level

Whisker requires clumping litter for the Litter-Robot 4 and lists strictly absorbent, non-clumping, loose-clumping, newspaper and wood-pellet litters as not allowed. The only exception it states appears in the manual rather than the online getting started guide, and covers beads or crystals small enough to pass through the screen. The dimensions of any named crystal litter have not been verified here, so this page does not say that a particular crystal product qualifies, and wood and newspaper litters stay on the not allowed list. Check a specific product against Whisker's current guidance before using it in the robot.

Then check the fill. For a first fill, the getting started guide says to fill just below the raised MAX fill line and spread the litter flat. For top-ups, Whisker's guide and manual say the litter should meet the line without going over it.

If you switch litter, remember Cornell's January 2015 guidance that most cats prefer unscented, finer-textured litter. That is general, so confirm your cat still accepts the new one.

  1. Find the litter brand and type you use.
  2. Compare it with the maker's litter list.
  3. Check the litter level against the MAX fill line.
  4. Reset the weight scale after adding litter or emptying the drawer.

Waste area and cleaning routine

Look at where waste goes. Empty the drawer, then reset the weight scale as the guide says, and check the maker's current guide for your model's emptying schedule.

Write down what you find. Note when the smell is strongest, how full the drawer was and which litter is in use. Support can work with those details.

Cornell advises daily removal of clumps and feces for litter boxes in general. Ask Whisker how that advice applies to your automatic model.

Add-ins and when to contact support

The Litter-Robot 4 guide covers litter type, not add-ins. Before you put any powder or granule in the unit, ask Whisker support whether it is acceptable. Do not assume it is. The litter box deodorizer for Litter-Robot guide covers add-in and compatibility questions in more detail.

Purrify is activated carbon granules in bags, and the maker describes it as the most powerful odor remover in the world. If Whisker support confirms an add-in is acceptable, we suggest the 120g bag for most homes.

Contact support if the smell stays after these checks, or if the manual's steps do not match what you see. Have your model, litter brand and notes ready.

Quick questions

How do I clean the Litter-Robot 4 globe?

Whisker's Litter-Robot 4 guide: press Empty, return to Home, power off and unplug before removing it. Wash with water and mild soap, no bleach, dry completely. Never submerge, spray or soak the base or control panel.

Can I use crystal litter in the Litter-Robot 4?

Only if small enough: the Litter-Robot 4 manual allows beads or crystals small enough to pass through the screen, though Whisker's current online getting started guide does not repeat that exception. This guide has not verified any named crystal litter, so check the product against Whisker's current guidance and manual.
