Why odor claims are narrower than 'no smell'

The odor claims we sourced share a pattern. Arm & Hammer says lab tests found lower odor levels after 9 days than litter alone, for its deodorizer powder. Fresh Step claims up to 15 days of odor control for its Simply Unscented litter. Both are maker claims, and the test conditions were not shown.

Read 'odor control' as 'less than something else', then ask what the comparison is. Litter alone? Another brand? How many days? A claim of up to 15 days is a ceiling, not a promise for your box. If a bag does not say, you cannot know.

What can help reduce odor

Start with the parts you control. Cornell advises daily removal of clumps and feces and one more box than the number of cats. Its guidance, dated January 2015, is general care advice, not a promise about smell. The cat box odor control guide takes these steps in order.

Next, follow the bag. Fresh Step directs a fill of 3 to 4 inches. World's Best Cat Litter directs 2 to 3 inches. Makers differ, so read yours instead of copying another brand's depth.

Fresh Step's page for Simply Unscented describes a clumping clay litter with carbon, made with no added fragrances and no added dyes. The maker asks for litter 3 to 4 inches deep and daily scooping, and says used litter goes in the trash and should not be flushed. These are the maker's directions, checked on October 23, 2026, and they say nothing about how long any litter stays fresh.

Claims to treat with caution

Scent wording is easy to misread. Fresh Step describes Simply Unscented as formulated with no added fragrances or dyes, and its product FAQ describes a fragrance-free experience. World's Best says its Multiple Cat Unscented has no artificial perfumes, which on its own does not tell you whether the litter has any scent.

Carbon is another label word. Fresh Step lists enhanced carbon, and Tidy Cats describes its Free & Clean Unscented litter as containing activated charcoal. These are ingredient statements from the makers. Tidy Cats also advertises 10-day odor control for Free & Clean Unscented, and its page shows no test conditions or independent test.
